"I believe we have the right ingredients," said Justin Wiebe when discussing the potential for community creations through Portal.

While Battlefield 6 has been doing quite well for Battlefield Studios. Ripple Effect’s studio design director Justin Wiebe has spoken about wanting to improve the shooter’s Portal mode. In an interview with PCGamer, Wiebe admitted that the studios haven’t quite been doing enough to promote community creations.

“The people were phenomenal at stretching what we had built to do some amazing things, but they had to really work hard,” Wiebe said, discussing the power of the community and what it can do with the tools available to them through Portal. He also spoke about how Portal makes it easier for players to create something and have it be exposed to other players more easily than it used to be.

“If I created an experience, I had to be online hosting that experience when people logged in, or they would not be able to play,” he said. “So there was almost zero chance for something to go viral.”

While the Portal in Battlefield 6 was designed to alleviate these problems, Wiebe also spoke about the issues that the feature has been facing. Among these issues is the fact that discoverability of brand new experiences is rather lacking. Aside from Battlefield Studios’ own efforts, Portal has also seen plenty of “experiences” that are little more than ways to farm XP to unlock things.

“What we’re not doing a good enough job of right now is surfacing [Portal experiences] for the rest of the community to play,” he explained. “And there’s actually one technical issue we’ve been waiting to fix in order to be able to do that, which is painful, right? I just want these community creations to be shared. I want them to go wide. And so I’ve just been checking in every day asking ‘Is it done yet? Is it done yet?’ Because we really want to roll this stuff out, because the creations are fantastic.”

Despite these issues, however, Wiebe also noted that the Portal in Battlefield 6 has quite a bit of potential. “I believe that we have the right ingredients,” he said. “So fingers crossed that we get that resolved really quickly here and start to help Portal thrive for the community.”

The developers behind Battlefield 6 have been quite open about their plans with the game, and the decisions that they are making with each and every update. Recently, the developers had published a community update where they discussed the armour system in the battle royale modeBattlefield: REDSEC – and how it was designed to ensure that the core gameplay of Battlefield 6 doesn’t deviate too much in the different game mode. Thanks to this, weapons can feel similar across Battlefield 6 and REDSEC, while the latter can still feel different to play.

“That way, a weapon feels familiar whether you’re in MP, Gauntlet, or Battle Royale,” explained the developers. “We can also make changes that only affect REDSEC by tweaking damage vs. armor, without breaking weapon balance elsewhere.”

Battlefield 6 and REDSEC are both available across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
