Gearbox has announced that Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12th. The looter shooter was originally announced for September 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

In a video tweet (which was initially deleted after going live too early), CEO Randy Pitchford described the current state of development as a “best-case scenario.” The previously announced State of Play is also imminent, with Pitchford promising the developer would show “more about the game than you’ve ever seen before.”

Some users allege that the release date change may be due to Grand Theft Auto 6 potentially launching around late September/early October and Gearbox avoiding a clash. It may also want to avoid competing with Bungie’s Marathon, which is on track for September 23rd. Either way, stay tuned for more details and an official announcement.

Borderlands 4 takes place on a new planet, Kairos, where the dictatorial Timekeeper battles the Ripper Horde. Caught in between, the player controls a new Vault Hunter who joins the resistance against the former. A Vault is also likely involved, as is tradition, though, unlike previous titles, traversal is seamless without any loading screens.
