With so many big releases in the first week of September – including the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong – it’s easy to forget about the launch of Borderlands 4. In development for six years, it’s a big deal for Gearbox Entertainment, especially CEO Randy Pitchford, who believes it could propel the franchise’s sales past the 100 million mark.

Speaking to Insider Gaming at Gamescom, Pitchford said the team is “beginning to dig into what our post-launch is, and we’ve got some extremely exciting plans that I cannot wait to share and talk about.

“We’re now experts at making Borderlands 4, and when you’re making a game, you kind of figure out how to make it as you ship it. That’s one of the reasons why our post-launch content tends to be so good.”

Reflecting on how he first came to Gamescom with Borderlands 1, “just trying to scream from the tallest mountain to get anyone to pay attention to it and nobody cared,” the series has come a long way. “A lot of people predicted that Borderlands wasn’t going to work. Now, here we are with the game franchise, we will break 100 million units with this launch, easy, all in with the franchise.”

Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report confirms over 94 million lifetime sales for the series. Borderlands 4 could help achieve that coveted 100 million milestone. The real question is whether it surpasses Borderlands 3 as the franchise’s fastest-selling title or Borderlands 2 as the highest-selling.

Borderlands 4 launches on September 12th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, with the Switch 2 release coming October 3rd.
