Following a rumor that claimed the next Call of Duty, rumored to be Modern Warfare 4, was being tested on PS4, the official Twitter account has refuted the same. In the process, it outright confirmed that the title is not even in development for the console.
“Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”
Unless Microsoft has suddenly decided to make the previous-gen version exclusive to Xbox One, this year’s entry would mark the first time in 12 years that the next Call of Duty is exclusive to current-gen consoles. 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts was the first title in the series to debut on Xbox One and PS4, and ever since then, every subsequent entry has been cross-generational.
That includes last year’s much-maligned Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. It’s obviously a big step – the franchise is known for appealing to the widest audience (and at times, the lowest common denominator). How far back was this decided? And how will it affect the popularity of this year’s entry, which won’t launch on day one for Game Pass? Time will tell.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 allegedly launches in October. Logic follows that it should be announced this month and then revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, though it could be a surprise announcement like last year’s entry as well.
