Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Won’t Have Difficulty Options Because of Co-op

The difficulty is baked in for the sequel because "you have to approach a co-op campaign differently," says Treyarch's Miles Leslie.

Despite the sheer absurdity of launching a year after the sixth entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 offers several firsts for the series, including a four-player co-op campaign. As a result, however, it also doesn’t have difficulty options, instead scaling the challenge to the number of players.

Treyarch associate creative director Miles Leslie told IGN, “For the difficulty, it’s baked in. We’ve built it for solo or four-player squads as well. You cannot pick a difficulty like past games. We’ve baked it in because you have to approach a co-op campaign differently, and we wanted to make sure the missions felt right for solo players — we’re not forgetting about you, we love you — but also because it is a social experience we want to make sure it’s fun, but the right amount of challenging for two, three, and four players as well.”

With the campaign counting towards progression, including for the Battle Pass, it’s unknown if co-op offers additional XP or other benefits. Thankfully, those without friends can matchmake with others for the campaign. Whether solo or with others, there’s also a new PvE endgame mode for up to 32 players, which is like an extraction shooter.

Of course, you can also look forward to multiplayer (which features 18 maps) and round-based Zombies. Fan-favorites like Dead Ops Arcade are also making a long-awaited comeback.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches on November 14th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Stay tuned for more details, including a full multiplayer reveal, from Call of Duty Next in September.
