When it comes to open world games, more often than not, they value quantity over quality. Too often, such titles deliver absolutely massive worlds to players, which are filled with an abundance of side quests and optional activities, which usually end up being either too repetitive, or too meaningless- if not both.

With the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 though, CD Projekt RED are striving to make sure that doesn’t become an issue. They’ve spoken a great deal about the impact side quests will have in the upcoming RPG, and how they won’t be of the rote fetch quest variety either. Optional and side content, in fact, is something they’re so focused on, they have an entire team within their studio dedicated solely to that one aspect of the game.

And recently, while speaking in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine in their November 2019 issue (Issue 167), CDPR senior concept artist and coordinator Marthe Jonkers gave similar reassurances yet again- that though Night City is going to be a massive game world, it will still value quality over quantity, and that CDPR are ensuring the world doesn’t have trite or repetitive side quests.

“Night City is enormous,” said Jonkers. “But we also value quality over quantity, I have to be honest about that. There’s a lot to explore, but we would never just make all these half-empty buildings. We make sure that wherever you go, you actually get this high quality of exploration. We really try to make sure that around almost every corner there’s something interesting. When you’re somewhere you can already see another thing that might be interesting.”

“So it’s really like a puzzle, actually, when you think about Night City and how we designed it, a sort of big 3D puzzle to make sure that stuff stays interesting and not repetitive,” she added.

Recently, Jonkers also spoke about the way CDPR have designed Night City in a manner that is faithful to the source material of the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020, and how it’s going to be a world that will be full of interesting stories to explore. Read more on both through the links.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out on April 16, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
