Bungie’s Destiny was recently in closed beta testing for the PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3 (with open access available for all on the second to last day of testing) and it was phenomenal success. Bungie mentioned that it had been blown away by the numbers and now Activision has revealed that approximately 4,638,937 players took part in the beta.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg stated that, “This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date. Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”

Bungie COO Pete Parsons said he himself was “totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta” and that the feedback gathered during the period has been “invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

Destiny is out on September 9th. Thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comments.
