Of the Pokémon clones to spawn in the mid-late ‘90s, Digimon has proven to be the one that’s outlasted the pack. Still, though, it never managed to reach the kind of heights that Pokémon did (which few things have ever managed to do). But things like that can be a double-edged sword, as due to not being a mega-success, it has allowed the franchise to experiment in ways that Pokémon can’t- or won’t, rather. One such example is the upcoming Digimon Survive, a game that mixes several genres and goes to some unexpected places.
A new developer diary is out, featuring series producers Habu Kazumasa and Tsuzuki Katsuaki talking about the franchise and how it’s evolved. With Survive they talk about how it takes from various parts of the ongoing Digimon mythos. The game will mix different elements of previous genres the series has touched, particularly RPGs. It also has strong survival and visual novel elements that can lead to branching paths, and even deaths of key characters, depending on the choices you make. You can see the video below.
Digimon Survive will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC some time this year.
