The handheld version to the popular Nintendo Wii title that saw our favourite simian Donkey Kong return to home consoles will be releasing in both North America and Europe on May 24th. Of course, we refer to Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D that sees the protagonist (with faithful sidekick Diddy Kong) battle a new force that’s going around stealing DK’s bananas.

Like seriously, keep Cranky Kong but why the bananas for crying out loud?

Donkey Kong Country Returns was originally developed for the Wii by Retro Studios, which you’ll recognize better for developing the extraordinary Metroid Prime series. Here too they do a stellar job, but the porting to Nintendo 3DS will be done by Monster Games which already developed PilotWings Resort for Nintendo and has experience with racing games.

We’ll see how the game unfolds on the 3DS and whether the 3D effect will be worth a damn but it is a good addition to the handheld’s burgeoning library.
