DOOM’s closed alpha will be happening far sooner than expected- Bethesda has announced that the long awaited reboot of id Software’s classic shooter franchise will be having its multiplayer alpha test take place this weekend, from 12:01 EDT on Friday, October 23, through to Sunday, October 25, at 11:59 PM EDT.

The alpha will be fairly limited- testers will get to play 6v6 team deathmatch games on a map called Heatwave. The alpha will let you try out six weapons and two pieces of equipment, which leaked yesterday, and will allow players to choose from either pre set loadouts, or custom built ones. In addition, multiple items will be scattered on the map, which can change the course of the game. According to Bethesda, these are:

  • The Demon Rune, which can turn the tide of a battle by transforming a player into a bad-ass Revenant fully loaded with dual rocket launchers and a jetpack.
  • The Gauss Cannon, a high-powered weapon that can destroy a foe in a single blast.
  • Power-ups like Quad Damage and Invisibility – you can guess what each of these does.

Of course, all of these will have limitations, such as a set time that they are effective for, or cooldown timers.
