To call Elden Ring one of the most highly acclaimed and successful games of 2022 wouldn’t be an exaggeration in the slightest. FromSoftware’s open world action RPG was showered with plaudits and glowing reviews upon launch, and has continued to enjoy similar success in the time since then not only with impressive sales, but a deluge of awards as well.
In fact, it has now won more Game of the Year awards from various outlets and critics than any other game to date, surpassing The Last of Us Part 2. Users over on ResetEra have been tracking Game of the Year wins for games across a multitude of outlets and publications, and for 2022, Elden Ring leads the packs, having received the top honours a total of 324 awards at the time of writing, which includes 281 GotY awards from critics and 43 courtesy of votes from audiences.
It beats a record previously held by The Last of Us Part 2, which was 2020’s big winner, having won a total of 322 awards (via gameawards.net), of which 208 were by media outlets and 114 via fan votes.
Funnily enough, though we’re massive fans of both games here at GamingBolt, neither game won out top honours in its respective year. In 2022, we crowned God of War Ragnarok as our Game of the Year (with Elden Ring ranking in second place), while in 2020, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was our big winner (with The Last of Us Part 2 coming in at No. 4).
Given the fact that 2023 has only just begun and there are plenty of outlets out there who’ve yet to conduct their yearly awards and hand out accolades, there’s a good chance that those numbers will continue to climb for Elden Ring.
