While bringing crossplay to Fallout 76 might be difficult on a technical level, Bethesda has had internal discussions about it.

In light of the release of a major update for Fallout 76 – Season 20: Glow of the Ghoul – creative director Jon Rush has spoken about the continued success of the online shooter, as well as the possibility of Bethesda bringing cross-platform multiplayer to the title.

In an interview with WCCFTech, Rush spoke about the success of Fallout 76, especially thanks to Amazon’s live-action TV adaptation of the franchise. He spoke about the show bringing a spotlight to older Fallout titles as well, with players seemingly going back to play Fallout 3 too.

“The game continues to be a success,” said Rush. “We definitely saw a lot of success last year with the release of the show and the show kind of casting a bit of a spotlight on all the Fallout IP. So, there were people hopping into Fallout 3, 4, 76. 76 is still thriving, it’s still growing. We have more ideas than we could possibly ever do and have no plans to stop. We’re going to continue supporting this game, continue supporting our players and telling the story. There’s never been a better time to adventure with your friends in the wasteland.”

With this growth in players in light of the show, Rush also answered a question about the possibility of crossplay coming to Fallout 76. He mentions that, aside from technical considerations, crossplay is a feature that the studio has had internal discussions about. Ultimately, he says that the feature might come in later on, but that players also shouldn’t wait with bated breath to be able to play on PC with their friends on Xbox.

“We’ve had discussions about crossplay in the past,” said Rush when asked about the technical issues that would arise from trying to bring crossplay to Fallout 76. “There’s a lot of technical limitations with that. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I wouldn’t be waiting around for it, either.”

Fallout 76 just got its Glow of the Ghoul update, which brought it with a host of new content, including allowing players to turn into ghouls. The update also brought with it new decorative items that players can use to outfit their C.A.M.P., with the major theme this time around being radioactive waste.

Along with Glow of the Ghoul’s release date, Bethesda has also previously revealed details about future content plans for Fallout 76‘s Season 20. As part of the season, there will be a host of events ranging from Photo Mode contests, double experience events, and even a Big Bloom event to celebrate the arrival of Spring in May.

Fallout 76 has seen quite a bit of growth since its release. While there were quite a few critiques about the game when it came out all the way back in 2018, the game has since grown in both amount of content, as well as number of players. As of November 2024, Fallout 76 had crossed the 21 million player mark.

Fallout 76 is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Console players can also partake in the game on current-gen systems through backwards compatibility on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
