By now, you’re probably sick of hearing of Final Fantasy 16’s Eikons. They each have multiple stages and phases in addition to unique elements (with one touted as akin to a pro wrestling match). Clive can also use the summons’ abilities while fighting in human form with combo chaining and real-time swapping.

As one would expect, an entire “ability tree” of Eikon abilities will be available. Speaking to Press-Start, producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that unlocking these abilities is done by earning points from normal battles. You can even upgrade abilities further and respec as many times as desired.

“We want players to be able to use this system to customize their character to their play style, to use these points to purchase abilities that they want to use or power up the abilities that they enjoy using. That said, we also want players to be able to decide on something that fits them. And so, rather than having those point decisions be final, we’re going to allow players the opportunity to refund those points at any time and as many times as they want. They can experiment with different builds until they come to one that suits their play-style best without having to worry about starting over.”

We’ve seen some of the abilities from previous trailers. In GamesRadar’s preview, it confirmed that Phoenix’s ability “Rising Flames” serves as a launcher for sending foes into the air. Garuda’s ability “Deadly Embrace” allows for pulling enemies in to keep a combo going. There’s a lot to look forward to and customize, though you’ll also have AI-controlled party members to help out.

Final Fantasy 16 launches in Summer 2023 for PS5. Additional details on the world and story, along with a new trailer, will be revealed this Fall so stay tuned.
