"Some may be minigames that can be played throughout the course of the entire game, others may be one-offs that are specific to a certain, singular quest," says game director Naoki Hamaguchi.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s hugely anticipated launch is right around the corner, and with reviews for the game having gone live well ahead of its release and painted a glowing picture of the epic journey that Square Enix is on the verge of delivering, excitement is sky-high. Among many of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s elements that have received overwhelming praise in recent days, its vast and varied collection of minigames has received quite a bit of attention in particular, and game director Naoki Hamaguchi has now provided a clearer picture of just how many minigames players will find throughout the experience.

Speaking in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Hamaguchi revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has nearly 30 minigames scattered throughout its runtime. According to Hamaguchi, some of these are recurring, some are found in certain regions of the game’s open world setting, and some are exclusive to specific quests or activities.

“We’ve included close to 30 minigames within this title,” he said. “Some may be minigames that can be played throughout the course of the entire game, others may be one-offs that are specific to a certain, singular quest. And others may be games that you can play within a particular region of within the world map. So, there’s a variety of minigames includes and for these ones, like Queen’s Blood, which are meant for the players to play throughout the entire game.”

Interestingly, Hamaguchi has also revealed further details on Queen’s Blood in particular, revealing that it’s not just a full-featured, game-wide card collecting and battling activity, but the centerpiece of an entire narrative-driven optional questline.

From the aforementioned Queen’s Blood to playing the piano and much, much more, Square Enix has revealed a number of the minigames included in the upcoming action RPG (though some fan-favourites from the original won’t be returning– at least (hopefully) until the trilogy’s final instalment).

Queen’s Blood and the game’s roster of minigames in general were some of the many things we highlighted in our own review of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, where we awarded it a score of 10/0, saying, “one of the best Final Fantasy games of all time.” You can read the full review through here.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29 for PS5.
