Everything that we’ve seen of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has suggested that the game’s going to look to strike a balance between lovingly recreating and paying homage to the content from the original game, and adding in its own flourishes, expanding upon things with new stories and details. Square Enix have uploaded the opening movie of the upcoming remake, and the video strikes that balance perfectly as well.

If you’re played the original Final Fantasy 7, you probably remember its opening movie, showing Aerith, zooming out from her to show all of Midgar, before going right back into things with Cloud jumping off of a train, kicking the game into gear. All of that is recreated in this video, but with all the panache, added level of detail, and production values you would expect. Best of all, all of this is preceded by what is essentially a montage of Midgar, showing various parts of the bustling – and yet decaying – city. For fans of the game, it’s a treat to watch. Take a look below.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be out exclusively for the PS4 on April 10. It won’t be out on any other platform at least until a year after that. The game will also be playable at PAX East later this month.
