Square Enix’s Foamstars has received a release date, launching on February 6th for PS4 and PS5. However, since its announcement, the 4v4 party shooter has been compared to Nintendo’s Splatoon, with players spraying foam in arenas and using it to traverse instead of ink.

Producer Kosuke Okatani is aware of the same, and when asked by VGC if he was tired of all the comparisons, he laughingly responded, “First of all, yes. There have been many comparisons on the internet, but also, we saw on social media that the people who actually played it saw that it’s a completely different game, and I hope you also agree.”

While Okatani feels that the “mechanic of having the things you shoot stay on the field is very unique,” he also jokingly said that a genre name akin to Soulsborne or Metroidvania would be “a great honor.”

Along with PS4 and PS5, Foamstars will be available on PlayStation Plus from February 6th to March 4th. All subscriber tiers can thus claim it for free. It offers three modes – Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival and Rubber Duck Party – with multiple characters having unique abilities. You can unlock cosmetics for them, ranging from new skins to emotes and dances. Stay tuned for more details en route to the game’s launch.
