Video games are accused a ton of things. From miscreant behaviour and deflated intelligence to violent shootings and other manic sprees. One of the more valid criticism, however, has been how the video game industry portrays women. Be it their over-sexualization or rampant misogyny, the industry’s got it all.
God of War: Ascension has been garnering criticism lately for pushing that level of “ultra violence”. But according to SCE Santa Monica’s David Hewitt, there are still places the team won’t go.
There are some things we’ve pulled back from. I think where this has been an issue is with violence against women — the team’s pulled back from some of that and assessed that a little more carefully.
Hewitt also considers it an anti-thesis to typical video game violence
There’s not a lot of flourishes, there’s not any kind of enjoying the moment. There’s nothing about this that he’s enjoying.
God of War: Ascension releases on March 12th 2012 for PS3.
