Google Discontinues Daydream VR Support As Stadia’s Release Looms

As one platform starts, another dies.

Stadia

Yesterday came the big news of finally getting the release date for Google’s ambitious streaming service, Stadia. It will launch next month, and we’ll get to see what this thing is all about. But before it comes to life, it seems another Google project must die first as the Daydream Viewer VR headset seems to be on its way out.

Google revealed to Variety that the upcoming Google Pixel 4 would not be compatible with any Daydream Viewer VR device and that the company will no longer produce or sell the headset. It essentially kills the Google VR device.

The Daydream Viewer is among the many different experiments that Google has started and have killed off in a very short time period. Does that mean anything for Stadia? A bad omen perhaps? It’s hard to say, of course, and it seems Google has a much, much bigger scope in mind for Stadia than they ever did for the Daydream. We can only wait to see what happens after Stadia launches on November 19th.
