Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Granblue Fantasy Versus – Cygames Planning Simultaneous Worldwide Release

Director Tetsuya Fukuhara also explains the lack of a release window for Relink.

Granblue Fantasy Relink

Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy is one of the most popular mobile games, but its console releases are still fairly mysterious. We know that Granblue Fantasy Versus, a fighting game adaptation of the franchise by Arc System Works, is on the way. Then there’s the action RPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink, which saw PlatinumGames involved in development before ending its contract earlier this month.

According to director Tetsuya Fukuhara in conversation with Twinfinite at the Granblue Fes 2018 back in December, it seems the current plan is to release both titles at the same time. This dual-release will happen worldwide and localization is being handled internally at Cygames. Though the reasoning for both games releasing together is still unknown, Fukuhara did explain why Granblue Fantasy: Relink hasn’t been given a new release window.

“2018 was our initial goal,” he said. “After the project kicked off, it continued to become more and more massive, as the IP itself was growing at the same time. Also, it wasn’t as easy as we initially thought to implement the full details of the Granblue world into 3D models, especially for the backgrounds. We didn’t want to make compromises on the quality. It was possible to choose the fastest and easiest way, but we didn’t. That’s the reason why the game hasn’t been released yet.

“At the moment it doesn’t have a release date because we already delayed it once, we never, ever want to do it again. We will release that information when we’re absolutely sure that we can hit that date without risking any more delays.”

Hopefully the full interview should provide more insight into Cygames’ plans for both games. Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Granblue Fantasy Versus are both in development for PlayStation 4.
