Al Pratt was probably the first super-hero to call himself The Atom but then was succeeded by Ray Palmer. The name came to be, by a student taking the name because of his  very small stature, although he was an incredible physical combatant despite his appearance and later gained superhuman strength. He was a valuable part of Justice Society of America, All-Star Squadron, Black Lantern Corp.
