Harmonix Looking At Reviving Rock Band and Dance Central

Will the two music franchise behemoths make an unlikely return?

One of the biggest franchises last generation was Rock Band, which Harmonix, Viacom, and EA collectively produced in response to Activision’s Guitar Hero. The games were all exceedingly high quality, but after the music game market crash, the franchise faded from public view. Harmonix went on to make the Kinect exclusive Dance Central series, but even that eventually disappeared from the limelight, especially as Ubisoft’s Just Dance games took over.

But now, Gamespot reports, Harmonix is looking at bringing both the franchises back. During a PAX panel, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos teased that the Boston area studio has plans of reviving the two brand for the next generation of consoles.

“The Rock Band and Dance Central franchises are near and dear to our hearts and our minds. And we have grand plans to bring back both of them with guns blazing at some point in the coming console cycle,” he said.

Considering especially how high quality Rock Band was, a return of the brand wouldn’t hurt at all. One would only hope, however, that Activision does not cause a market glut with its music brands in turn, that’s all.
