Binaural audio is only one such tool.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice still isn’t out yet but development is still underway. The studio recently released a new developer diary talking about the game’s audio. With how the story works and the voices Senua hears in her head, the video focuses on just how the team crafted these disturbing voices.

As it turns out, Ninja Blade talked to both psychology experts as well as those who suffered from hearing voices. These help to make the game’s theme of mental health feel all the more authentic. The implementation of binaural audio, thus allowing for various voices to be positioned differently within a single space, also contributes to the haunting nature of it all.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was supposed to release in 2016 on PC and PS4 but we’ve heard no news on when exactly it’s going to be released. Though confirmed for a 2016 release, the year is almost up and Ninja Theory have offered no update yet.
