The Black Mesa Research Facility bears many similarities with real world scientific facilities
The Black Mesa Research Facility was not thought up out of thin air, in fact the developers really put in a lot of thought and effort to research for inspiration. For example the Facility bears many similarities with real world scientific facilities such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, and the Area 51 which is fabled to be a myth, or the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
