Half Life Episode 1 is where the Borealis first makes an appearance
When Dr Judith Mossman makes an emergency transmission, part of her broadcast shows the legendary ship; Borealis. What made this Ship so sought after by the Combine is that the Borealis contained an enormously powerful and dangerous secret, which we all know is about portals and teleportation on a larger scale than that of a handheld portal device. Which is likely the reason the Combine are searching for it, as they could possibly connect back to Combine Over world and flood the planet with their large and powerful armies and destroy earth permanently.
