The Indie genre has become a powerhouse in the last few years and 2014 looks like it's set to build up even more steam.

Planetary Annihilation:

Maybe strategy games are more your speed, or you’re just in the mood to play one, but you’ve already played through everything. Well, Planetary Annihilation may be the perfect cure for that desire. The spiritual successor to Total Annihilation is up and running now, well sort of. Again, this is another one of those Early Access deals on Steam. If you don’t mind some bugs, placeholders and maybe some general goofiness, go ahead and jump in on the ground floor.

The idea of this game is amazing, really. You set up a fleet of giant, killer robots on a planet, while your opponent does the same. Eventually, you will either invade or be invaded by them and the sheer size of your military force (or theirs,) can completely obliterate the planet they are on. The game even allows you to utilize asteroids floating around in space as a massive, guided missile of apocalyptic destruction. Really, who can’t get behind something like that? Except maybe the dinosaurs, of course.
