Just Cause 3 is a thing, and will be coming next year. This was recently confirmed, much to the joy of everyone who fell in love with Just Cause 2 which is perhaps the rare example of a true sandbox in video games.

Speaking about Just Cause 3 to Game Informer (which revealed the existence of the game to begin with via its cover story), the developers discussed multiple things, such as world size, destruction, and story.

“Just Cause 2 was already enormous,” Avalanche Studios said. “We really wanted to focus now on density and the feel of the world itself. So we didn’t necessarily just have to do increased land mass. But we have certainly gone a lot bigger when it comes to density of the world. And now it’s not just on top of the world–we also have caves and tunnels and all sorts of stuff there, too.”

There was also some discussion about the kind of destruction you can expect from the game- a memorable example given by the studio was if you’re in a vehicle and you’re being chased, you can destroy a bridge behind you to send your enemies to their death, which certainly sounds maniacally satisfying, in a sort of sociopathic kind of way.

The developer also confirmed its commitment to telling a story in Just Cause 3, even though, let’s face it, most people will probably just ignore it, and get right down to the sandbox anyway.
