Kingdom Hearts 3 Has Unique Transformations For Each Keyblade

Director Tetsuya Nomura also discusses Sora's appearance changing with each world.

Square Enix recently blessed us with new gameplay for Kingdom Hearts 3. We got a look at one of the new Disney worlds (Toy Story) along with the accompanying visual style for Sora and his friends. The second trailer was more interesting since it showcased the various Keyblade transformations that Sora could evoke. Sora went from dual handguns to what seemed like a grenade launcher. Needless to say, it looked pretty cool.

Director Tetsuya Nomura had more to say about the Keyblade transformations in a recent round-table interview featuring DualShockers. When talking about the focus on Keyblade transformations, Nomura said that, “They turn into different forms during combat. In the trailer you may have seen the Keyblade turn into a giant hammer, or a drill. There are different transformations unique to each Keyblade that Sora wields. I think those crazy and dynamic changes, you’ll see them more in the Keyblade transformations.”

As for the change in Sora’s appearance within the Toy Story world, Nomura said, “As you saw in the trailer when Sora jumps into the world of Toy Story, his form changes to match that environment. There will be some appearance changes reflective of the environment that Sora is going to be in, so I would encourage you to stay tuned on this.”

Interestingly, Nomura also noted that with the change in workflow from previous iterations, the development team was now working on having as much gameplay within each world. This is opposed to have a number of different worlds that would be smaller.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is apparently coming in 2018 for the Xbox One and PS4. It could also come to the Nintendo Switch and have DLC at some point but none of this is confirmed. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
