Kingdom Hearts 3 Screenshot Pays Homage to Final Fantasy 7

Look familiar to you?

Twenty years ago, Final Fantasy 7 was first released for Sony’s PlayStation One and it redefined the success of the franchise – and the direction of JRPGs – for years to come. On the 20th anniversary of its release, the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter posted a screenshot from Kingdom Hearts 3 that pays homage to Final Fantasy 7 and Cloud.

If you’ve seen the cover art for the classic (arguably one of its most iconic images), then you’ll see the resemblance. For Kingdom Hearts 3 fans, it gives a look at one of Sora’s Keyblades, the overall environmental design and how well the game is shaping up to look.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has no release date and is apparently a far way off. It’s in development for the PS4 and Xbox One on Unreal Engine 4.

One of the games in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, namely Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage, offers a look at some of the mechanics that Kingdom Hearts 3 will use like Situation Commands. It’s currently available for PS4.
