Last week was a big one for new game releases, with both Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Tekken 8 releasing on the same day, but though both games have enjoyed widespread critical acclaim, in Japan, one is selling a lot better than the other.

Famitsu has released its latest weekly charts for hardware and physical software sales in Japan, and on the software front, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has dominated proceedings. Its PS5 version occupies the top spot with over 102,000 units sold, while its PS4 version sits in third place, having sold over 77,000 units.

Collectively, the game sold over 180,000 physical units at launch across both platforms in Japan. In comparison, Yakuza: Like a Dragon sold over 156,000 units upon its release in 2020, while last year’s Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name debuted with over 123,000 units sold.

Conversely, where Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has enjoyed a strong launch, Tekken 8 has endured a tepid debut. With a little over 20,000 units sold, it sits in fifth place, and has seen the lowest ever launch sales for a mainline Tekken game in Japan (including the Tekken Tag Tournament games), with Tekken 7 being the second-lowest (over 54,000 units sold at launch).

A couple of other new releases have also debuted in the top 10. Spike Chunsoft’s roguelike RPG Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island has seen a strong debut, coming in at No. 2 with over 84,000 units sold. Meanwhile, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy comes in at No. 8, selling over 10,000 units. The Switch version of Capcom’s collection is the only one to figure in the top 10.

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo Switch wasn’t the top-selling console in Japan this week, which is a rare occurrence, with the PS5 beating it to the punch with over 49,000 units sold. The Switch, meanwhile, sold over 46,000 units, and has now sold over 32 million units in Japan to date.
