Almost two weeks after the original launch of Mario Kart World, Nintendo has released the first major update for the game. Bringing the title up to version 1.1.1, the update brings with it a host of bug fixes, including one for a bug where “items were no longer able to be used.”

Other bugs fixed in the update include one where controls became non-responsive when picking a character to start Free Roam and a bug where players could slip through the wall near the finish line at the DK Spaceport level. The update also fixed a bug that could sometimes cause communication errors when players were trying to join their friends in the VS Race, Battle, and Online Play modes.

Mario Kart World has been incredibly successful for Nintendo since the game was released as a launch title for the Switch 2. A report from earlier this month revealed that more than 780,000 physical copies were sold in Japan alone. The development of Mario Kart World had been quite intense, with Nintendo also contracting Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft to help develop the open world. Nintendo’s developers had also spoken about why the studio doesn’t like referring to the kart racer as an “open-world game”. According to producer Kosuke Yabuki, this is because the phrase “open world” has too loose of a definition.

“We, on the development team side, don’t call this world an open world,” said Yabuki. “Because in our view we don’t feel that the term open world is clear in terms of its definition.” Yabuki also mentioned that Mario Kart World has a bigger world for players to explore. “We do have this expansive world, and we’ve placed therein the Mario Kart Circuit or the Bowser Castle, or the Choco Mountain, and tried to build a new Mario Kart,” he said.
