Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looks set to continue Insomniac Games’ streak of delivering technical showpieces on PS5, and while plenty of attention has gone to the visual improvements its making – like having ray tracing enabled in all three of its graphics modes – there’s plenty to be excited about on the audio side of things as well.

For instance, it’s been confirmed that the superhero sequel has been natively mixed in Dolby Atmos, which would make it probably the first high profile PS5 title to tout the same. In response to a question regarding the same on ResetEra, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing responded, “Yes, and we mixed cinematics in Atmos as well.” However, Stevenson says he is “unsure” about the “specifics of containers” when it comes to real-time gameplay.

Sony recently also added native Dolby Atmos support to the PS5 with its most recent firmware update.

Meanwhile, speaking to IGN, Insomniac’s director of core technology, Mike Fitzgerald, also touched on how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is making strides with its implementation of 3D audio. Fitzgerald said, “Our audio team has been working with 3D audio pipelines now for a little while on this console, and they’ve really figured out how to do it really well, and they approach designing all these missions and the soundscapes for these missions in a new way with ambisonics [a full-sphere surround sound format] and positional audio for even more of the objects that are in the scene. So if you’re in the middle of that Emily-May Foundation area and you have people up on different balconies and behind you, you can hear where everything’s coming from to even greater effect than in our past games.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is due out for PS5 on October 20. Insomniac has revealed that it’ll be roughly as long as the first game in the series.
