It was bound to happen sooner or later. Whether by all the negative publicity Microsoft has been suffering or for some other reason, the Xbox 360’s 28 month long reign in the United States as the top-selling console has come to end.

What’s interesting is how Microsoft claimed it sold 114,000 units in May, thus making it the top-selling console again. However, the May 2013 NPD report indicates that it was actually the Nintendo 3DS that was on top.

Though a slow month overall, the 3DS saw a growth of 60 percent in software sales as compared to May 2012. This is due to a good number of 3DS games releasing in May, including Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (all which made the top 10 list).

Things will probably improve for Microsoft this month due to the release of a new design for the Xbox 360. Stay tuned for more details.
