On its official website, Konami has updated its sales figures to reveal that the Metal Gear franchise has sold 59.5 million copies since the release of the original Metal Gear back in 1987. This is a slight increase from a similar previous update revealing 59.3 million copies having been sold.

Interestingly, sales of the Metal Gear franchise rising likely have to do with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Metal Gear Solid, as none of the other titles in the franchise are currently available for purchase digitally, depending on your region.

While these games are playable on modern systems and PC, there is still no way to play older titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 3, and several spin-off games, aside from emulation, or in the case of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, through the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection being playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S through backwards compatibility.

While things have been relatively quiet when it comes to discussing the Metal Gear franchise, developer PlatinumGames has revealed that it will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the cult-classic action game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on February 21. Konami has also suggested that long-awaited announcements could be made this year, with leaks claiming that Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is in the works.
