Though the PS4 has had a rather slow uptake in Japan compared to the rest of the world, there was hope that Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain would resolve that on release.

After launching on September 2nd in the country, Media Create reported that the PS4 version had sold 293,652 units at launch while the PS3 version sold 117,547 units. The PS4 and PS3 versions topped Media Create’s sales charts as a result. PS4 sales also saw a massive jump from 18,359 units sold the week prior to 54,494 units sold in the week of The Phantom Pain’s release.

Overall, the game has sold 411,199 units in Japan which is pretty good. Though its “main” predecessor Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots did slightly better while selling on just the PS3 with 476,334 units sold, The Phantom Pain still achieved its goal of boosting PS4 sales in the region.

What are your thoughts on the game’s success in Japan? Let us know in the comments.
