Take this with a grain of salt but Microsoft is apparently looking to acquire Mojang, developer of the hit open world sandbox series Minecraft, for $2 billion. The news comes courtesy of WSJ which says “a person with knowledge of the matter” confirmed that both companies “serious discussions” for an acquisition.
If the news is true, we could see the deal being signed next week itself. So why are we skeptical?
Primarily due to Mojang’s insistence to not be acquired by any one, for one. The studio has rebuked acquisition talks from just about “every major gaming company”. Granted, times can and do change. Microsoft has been able to pull off some seemingly impossible acquisition this year, namely the Gears of War IP and timed exclusivity of Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Regardless, we’ll need to wait and see what the truth is. With more than 54 million copies of Minecraft sold, Microsoft would surely benefit from adding Notch’s baby to its portfolio.
