Microsoft’s Remedies Statement to EU Indicates Console and Hardware Competition isn’t a Concern

The EU and Microsoft are more interested in potential problems in the cloud gaming market than the console market, going by the lack of Sony's name in statements.

In a statement where Microsoft is meant to offer remedies to the European Commission over antitrust issues regarding the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Sony has been found to be absent. In the statement, rather than talking about competition with the hardware and console market, as reported by Reuters, Microsoft instead focused on competition in the cloud gaming market.

The statement is meant to be a way for Microsoft to assure the EU regulatory body about the potential problems to competition that might arise due to the merger. The EU’s lack of mention of Sony also indicates that the regulatory body doesn’t believe there is a problem with competition in the console market.

While the EU seems to have its focus on the cloud gaming side of the market, however, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority seems to be focused on the issues with market competition that could arise from Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard.

In a recent statement, Microsoft said that it believes that its 10 year deal will offer PlayStation enough time to develop its own alternative to the Call of Duty franchise for PlayStation platforms, considering Sony’s own position as a major publisher and platform owner.
