Single player story modes tend to be the weakest parts of most fighting games, but the Mortal Kombat franchise has traditionally been the biggest exception to that rule. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 is looking like it’s going to continue that tradition, and its promise of a new and rebooted universe has certainly got series fans more than a little excited- but how lengthy will the game’s story mode be?

The question was recently posed to Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon, who confirmed that the story mode in Mortal Kombat 1 will be roughly as long as the campaigns in Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11. Both games’ campaigns were about 5-6 hours long on average, but could last as much as 16-17 hours with optional content included, so you should be expecting Mortal Kombat 1 to have a similar amount of content in its story mode.

Recently at San Diego Comic-Con, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that Li Mei, Tanya, and Baraka will be part of the main roster in Mortal Kombat 1, and that The Boys’ Homelander, DC’s Peacemaker, and Invincible’s Omni-Man will be added to the game as post-launch DLC guest characters. A third trailer that has yet to be publicly released also showcased Reiko and Motaro.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
