Mortal Kombat Developer is Not Ready to Announce Next Game

NetherRealm's Ed Boon appreciates "the enthusiasm for our next game" but says there are many variables that prevent an announcement.

Of the many games rumored to be appearing at The Game Awards 2021 was NetherRealm Studios’ next title. Rumored to be Mortal Kombat 12, the developer wouldn’t reveal anything at the awards show. Given its history of unveiling past Mortal Kombat titles, the opportunity felt right.

Over on Twitter, series co-creator and NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon somewhat explained what was going on. Responding to another user asking what was next for the franchise, Boon said, “Really appreciate the enthusiasm for our next game and wish we were ready to announce. But we aren’t yet. Many more variables involved than we are allowed to disclose.” Keep in mind that he’s not directly acknowledging Mortal Kombat 12 as the studio’s next game.

Otherwise, what those variables could be is anyone’s guess but the simplest answer is that the project is not in a state to be showcased. There may have been internal delays due to working from home or other issues that cropped up. Either way, it seems unlikely we’ll hear about it this year.

Time will eventually tell what NetherRealm has in store so stay tuned. In the meantime, Mortal Kombat 11 is available for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia. Check out our review for the base game here.
