Winner: The Evil Within
Shinji Mikami’s descent into madness is an old-school romp. It’s full of quick time events and instant death sequences. There are encounters with otherworldly monsters that you just can’t survive. Some of the mechanics felt clunky for those who weren’t used to this kind of horror experience. Also, just how scary was the game? Let’s be honest.
Nonetheless, it achieved that rare feat of shaking up the gamer. This could be attributed to the bat-shit insanity of the game but The Evil Within embraced its archaic rumblings and transported players back to a time when you didn’t always ammunition to help you out of a situation. It’s just too bad that the AI feels awkward or when the camera lets you down.
The Evil Within isn’t for everyone as even horror game fans will find much to bemoan. However, its rough edges only accentuate its appeal and prod us forward to the next stomach-churning event.
