Need for Speed film

Some properties are seemingly review-proof and the new Need for Speed film is no exception. Despite garnering overwhelmingly negative critical reception leading up to its release, the adaptation of EA’s best-selling franchise managed to earn $63.4 million from 40 territories worldwide in its opening weekend. The film was produced on a budget of $66 million and has more than likely broken even at this point.

Dreamworks distribution head for Disney Dave Hollis stated that, “It’s a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great. This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are.”

Need for Speed is perhaps best known for starring Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. The film was criticized for its horrible writing, lackluster supporting cast and ripping off The Fast and The Furious franchise.
