Amid the many titles teased for the next potential State of Play, Xbox Era co-founder Nick Baker mentioned Metro. It may seem completely innocuous, but 4A Games is confirmed to be working on a new title in the post-apocalyptic series. What isn’t so apparent is that it’s rumored to be a VR title.

As reported by Kurakasis on Twitter, it’s called Metro Awakening, with an announcement coming “very soon.” The next State of Play is rumored for January 31st/February 1st, so it could very well make an appearance.

4A Games first announced a new single-player title in the series for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC in 2020, later confirming the story to be influenced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Insider Gaming reported in August 2023 that external playtests were “consistently” ongoing for the past year.

It’s possible that Metro Awakening launches this year, with the State of Play announcement revealing the first trailer and release window. However, if it’s a VR title, will it still launch on Xbox Series X/S (assuming this is the same title)? It could be a traditional first-person shooter with a VR mode for the PS5 and PC versions, but we’ll need more details.

4A Games also said it was “actively exploring multiplayer concepts that will offer a new way to experience the world of Metro.” Its plans were unclear, but it’s “committed to more single-player, story-driven experiences in the Metro universe that our fans have come to know and love.”
