4A Games has an update on its future projects, assuring that they’re still in development. However, things have changed since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, and the team is working hard despite harsh circumstances.

The war in Ukraine is affecting the next Metro title, confirmed to be in development back in 2020, “for the better.” “We’ve never hidden the fact that the Metro series has always carried a strong political and anti-war message. Yes, we’ve always wanted to entertain and immerse you in our post-apocalyptic world, but there’s also been a bigger story to tell. And the war in Ukraine has made us re-think what kind of story the next Metro should be about.

“All the themes of Metro – conflict, power, politics, tyranny, repression – are now part of our daily life experiences. So, we’re embracing them and weaving them into the game with a renewed purpose.”

While it’s the “most important thing” for the studio right now, it also wants to manage expectations, especially given the situation for its Kyiv studio. At present, there’s no other news on its projects, and they’ll be “ready when they’re ready as we continue to channel all our passion, best efforts, and craft into them.

“Just like you, we’re really looking forward to the day when we’re able to share more info on them. The goals for our projects that we posted in our last update remain the same.”

The next Metro game is being developed on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It features an overhaul of the studio’s 4A Engine and renderer to “take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles.” Like previous titles, it will be a story-driven, single-player experience.

4A Games is also working on a multiplayer experience set in the Metro universe, though it will have a dedicated team separate from its single-player title. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the coming months.
