With recent rumours that Nintendo is planning on unveiling its next console, the Switch 2, in an event on January 16th, more reports are popping up to corroborate this announcement. According to The Verge, we might see Nintendo announcing the date for the reveal on January 15th.

As part of the most recent additions to the rumoured reveal event, The Verge has seemingly been able to verify the announcement with its own sources. The announcement of the console’s reveal date will happen tomorrow, with the event taking place the following day and offering an in-depth look at the console.

A podcast by former Nintendo employees, Kit & Krysta, have also expressed their opinions on January 16th being the date of the console’s reveal. The two hosts talk about how CES 2025 itself would have been a bad time to unveil the console considering other high-profile reveals like Nvidia’s new GPUs.

The original rumour that Nintendo would unveil the Switch 2 on January 16th came from insider NateTheHate. In a recent episode of his podcast, he talks about how the event will likely focus on showcasing the new hardware and will seemingly not have any game releases.

Nintendo itself has been quiet about its plans for unveiling the console, and previous rumours indicated a May announcement. If these latest rumours are true, however, we will likely see the company make some announcement regarding the new console tomorrow.

Aside from the date of the console’s unveiling, quite a few rumours and leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2 have been flying around. Among other things, we have seen leaked pictures that indicate that the Switch 2 will not be compatible with its predecessor’s dock and charger. Leaked pictures of the Switch 2 JoyCon controllers have also been floating around, indicating that the new console will make use of a different mechanism for attaching and detaching its controllers.

A patent uncovered earlier this month also revealed that the new console likely has its own neural net, which will allow it to make use of an AI-based image upscaler to display higher-resolution outputs than what it is actively rendering. As a result, the new console will likely have several current-gen games.

Among other games, rumours have indicated that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is one of the games being developed for the Switch 2. Ubisoft is also rumoured to have “more than half a dozen” ports of its games coming to Nintendo’s next console.

CES 2025 also provided some drama around the Switch 2, with accessory maker Genki showcasing a mock-up of the hardware to highlight its upcoming accessories. The company quickly backtracked, however, and Nintendo itself would confirm that any hardware that the company had was unofficial.
