Oculus had already been hinting that the projected 2015 release date for the consumer version of the pioneering Oculus Rift VR headest might be too ambitious, that it might, in fact, be missed. Today, they confirmed those suspicions- the consumer version of Oculus will be shipping out in the first quarter of 2016, they revealed. They did not give us any more details, including the final price we might expect, but at least we now know when to expect the headset to hit the market.

That said, they did show us the very first images of the consumer Oculus headset. From the images we have, which you can see above, it looks significantly less bulky than the developer models, although it still won’t be making any fashion statements any time soon.

Between Oculus Rift, Sony’s Morpheus, and Valve and HTC’s Vive, the VR wars are definitely heating up, and it will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Stay tuned.
