Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Debuts on Top of Japan Charts with Over 115,000 Units Sold

The remake fails to outsell the GameCube original or last year's Super Mario RPG remake, but performs better than the previous Paper Mario at launch.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door’s Nintendo Switch remake was the biggest new release last week, and unsurprisingly, the game has got off to a solid start with its sales all over the world, reflecting its strong critical acclaim. As per the newest charts for weekly physical software and hardware sales in Japan released by Famitsu, the remake was the best-selling game in the region last week, selling over 115,000 units.

The means the Switch remake sold less than the original GameCube version did upon release (over 137,000 units), but considering the face that the former will have seen a significantly higher share of digital sales – which, of course, aren’t included in Famitsu’s weekly charts – there’s a good chance that the remake ultimately ended up outperforming the original game by launch.

Meanwhile, it also feel short by the launch performance of last year’s Super Mario RPG remake (over 301,000 units sold) by quite a margin, though it did outsell 2020’s Paper Mario: The Origami King at launch (over 109,000 units sold).

On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch was once again the best-selling console of the week, moving over 48,000 units, while the PS5 followed behind with over 23,000 units sold.
