‘PC Is Essential’, Square Enix Says

"We want to have all our games on every platform available as far as possible."

More and more Japanese publishers are beginning to come around to PC gaming, and the expanded demographics and install base, and therefore sales and revenue, that it represents for them. One of the first Japanese publishers to realize the potential of PC gaming was Square Enix- and while they have not always been on top with their support for the system, they have largely done a good job.

Expect that to continue as, in an interview with the Telegraph, Chief Executive Officer Yosuke Matsuda reiterated the importance of PC, and indeed, a multiplatform development and release strategy, for all of the company’s games.

“There is definitely that variation between different regions, that is true,” he said. “Our basic thought for Japanese development studios and for our Western development studios like Eidos Montreal we’ve got games being made in London at Crystal Dynamics, we all basically follow the idea that we want people everywhere around the word to enjoy our games, so the basic policy is that we want to have all our games on every platform available as far as possible.”

He added, in explicit and no uncertain terms that, “We think PC is essential.”

So there you have it- PC gaming is going to be a huge part of Square Enix’s output going forward. Hopefully this means PC players won’t have to wait months or even years for a new game from Square, like they have had to with Final Fantasy 15, for example.
