While Microsoft have now revealed what their next console looks like, Sony are keeping things close to their chest still with the PlayStation 5. We finally have a look at the logo, and thanks to some leaks, we’ve got an idea of what the controller may look like. But by and large, Sony has kept talking about the upcoming system in vague terms. That continues today, as SIE CEO Jim Ryan wants to tease us about unique features the system will have.
In an interview with Business Insider Japan, Ryan talked about several aspects of the PS5, from the logo to the potential release window. When talking features, he said that the things that will make the system stand out are still unannounced, and that we’ve yet to hear what its distinguishing aspects will be (big thanks to Gematsu for translations).
“Each time a new console is released, the processor and graphics improve,” said Ryan. “Those are enticing of course, but we need to have special appeals as well. We have already confirmed the use of a solid-state drive. Having load times that are next to nothing is a major change.
“3D audio and the haptic feedback support of the controller are also things that, when you try them, you will be surprised at how big a change they are. Even just playing the racing game Gran Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller is a completely different experience. While it runs well with the previous controller, there is no going back after you experience the detailed road surface via haptic control and play using the adaptive triggers.
“But you know. There are still more unique elements for PlayStation 5 to come that separate it from previous consoles. The ‘bigger differences’ have yet to be announced.”
The PlayStation 5 will be released this holiday season alongside Microsoft’s Xbox Series X. At this point, Sony is most likely waiting until the big E3 conference to finally reveal the system, but it could also get its own dedicated event before that. We’ll keep you updated.
