Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee look like a rather dramatic change for the series so far- but it looks like a more traditional Pokemon game may be coming for the Nintendo Switch soon. Game Freak and Nintendo have confirmed that Game Freak is working on a full fledged, new, “core series” Pokemon RPG for the Nintendo Switch, and that it will be due out in the second half of 2019.
Just so there is no confusion about what this entails, Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda has also vey explicitly confirmed that the games will be “in the same style as Pokemon X/Y and Sun/Moon”– ergo, the core RPGs, presumably with full continuity, that fans of the franchise have come to expect.
Meanwhile, Let’s GO Pikachu and Let’s GO Eevee should hopefully help the franchise capture a vast casual fanbase ahead of the launch of those more core oriented ones next year.

2019 core RPG (untitled) is set to be "in the style of X and Y and Sun and Moon". This should appease competitive players, with Let's Go! aimed at a broad audience, "a core RPG for everyone".
