Pokemon Sword and Shield Trailer Showcases New Abilities, Ranked and Casual Battles Explained

Max Moves can cause secondary conditions to boost allied Pokemon among other things.

New details on Pokemon Sword and Shield’s new abilities along with details on how Ranked and Casual battles will work online have been released. You can check out the trailer below for new information on some of the moves. Even more intriguing is how abilities are affected by Dynamaxing.

Using Max Geyser will cause the rain condition while Max Knuckle will raise the attack of all friendly Pokemon as well as the user. Hilariously enough, even if your foe has an ability like Protect, a Max Move will still inflict damage. Regular Pokemon also have some neat abilities like Corviknight’s Mirror Mirror which reflects any stat-reducing moves.

As for online play, which requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, there will be Ranked Battles where Trainers of similar ranks collide. Win a battle and you’ll accrue points to increase your rank. Being the very best that ever was means battling in the top tier though so you’ll need to overcome some massive odds. If you happen to fulfill certain conditions, like completing multiple battles in a row, then you’ll receive some items.

Casual Battles are more relaxed, allowing for the use of Legendaries and Mythical Pokemon that would usually be restricted from Ranked. Single and Double Battle formats are available for both Casual and Ranked. Check here for more information.
