Prince of Persia has been dormant far too long, but soon, the beloved franchise will be making an unexpected but most welcome return. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – arguably the best game in the series – is getting remade from the ground up, and as with any remake for a beloved classic, there are lots of questions.

For instance, what sort of an approach are the developers are taking in terms of striking a balance between being faithful to the original and introducing their own new ideas? According to game director Pierre-Sylvain Gires, Ubisoft are definitely leaning toward the latter, while also introducing some crucial improvements the camera, the controls, and the combat, in addition to reworking all the cinematics.

“We stuck to the plot and storyline of original game,” Gires told GamingBolt in a recent interview. “However, we made changes to the gameplay and reworked on all the cinematics. When it comes to gameplay, we focussed on the 3 Cs- camera, controls, and combat. We reworked on the camera system and enhanced it. We improved the combat by introducing the multi-targeting system. We also added more acrobatic moves to the Prince. To sum it up, we have remained faithful to the original version but made improvements to modernize the game.”

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 21, 2021 (and who knows, a Switch version may or may not be coming later). The game received criticism for its visuals upon reveal, but it seems like the footage shown in the reveal trailer was from an older build of the game.

Our full interview with Gires will go live soon, so stay tuned.
